Support For Businesses That Pay Business Rates

The available support has been updated recently and should now be read in conjunction with the current HMRC Guidance COVID-19: Support for businesses (updated 26 March 2020) and COVID-19: guidance on business support grant funding (updated 30 March 2020).

Government Guidance:

Business rates relief – Applicable to all companies in the retail, hospitality and/or leisure sector.

A business rates payment holiday is available for the 2020-2021 tax year, and It applies to their properties in the retail and leisure sectors. (See Guidance for more detail)

The relief will be automatic from April 2020 onwards, and new council tax bills will be issued to exclude the business rates charge. We understand that the payment holiday is permanent.

In addition to the above, a cash grant will be given to these companies as follows:

  • £10,000 for each property with a rateable value of under £15,000
  • £25,000 for each property with a rateable value of between £15,001 and £51,000

Your local authority will contact you if you are eligible.

Business rates relief – Applicable to nursery businesses

A business rates payment holiday is available for the 2020-2021 tax year, and It applies to their properties in the nursery sectors. (See Guidance for more detail)

The relief will be automatic from April 2020 onwards, and new council tax bills will be issued to exclude the business rates charge. We understand that the payment holiday is permanent.

Businesses that pay little or no business rates – Applicable to all small businesses

Businesses that pay little or no business rates because they have been eligible for Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR) or Rural Rate Relief (RRR) will be eligible for a one off grant of £10,000. This is an automatic relief applicable to all business sectors and your local authority will contact you if you are eligible.

Kirk Rice commentary:

This is a welcome support to hard-hit sectors of the economy. The application of this support is automatic and local authorities should be issuing revised rating notices shortly. If you believe that you are due a relief or grant and you have not heard anything in the next two weeks, then you should contact your local authority

We understand that the payment holiday is a permanent reduction in the rates payments rather than a deferral which is clearly a good boost for a very hard-hit sector.
