Who might qualify for R&D tax relief?
Many businesses don’t realise they qualify. You don’t need to be in a lab or research facility to make a claim—if you’re improving systems, solving technical challenges or developing new ways of doing things, you could be eligible. Typical examples include:
- Improving or developing software, internal systems, or physical products
- Making processes more efficient through technical or scientific innovation (R&D tax claims often come from manufacturing, construction, or food production)
- Creating prototypes, testing new approaches, or finding workarounds to technical limitations (all potentially R&D tax qualifying activities)
Qualifying work doesn’t need to succeed to be eligible—it just needs to aim at solving a technical problem where the outcome isn’t certain from the outset.
