Team Kirk Rice Complete the Fleet Half Marathon Raising Funds for Stepping Stones DS

Yesterday, a team of 3 Kirk Rice staff, completed the Fleet Half Marathon to raise both the profile and much needed funds for local fleet charity, Stepping Stones DS.

Their places were funded by the Kirk Rice Partners and the team set themselves a target of £750, which they exceeded by £550.

With two experienced runners it was well within their abilities and with one relatively new to running it created an exciting brand new challenge. Margaret Marson was the fasted of the firm’s runners, crossing the line in 2hours 7 minutes.

The parent led Down Syndrome support group  was started in November 2006 by two local mums, who both had a daughter with Down Syndrome of a similar age and found there was a lack of support in the local area. They felt that what the area needed was a group that could offer families support and a place to meet and share experiences.

Stepping Stones DS now provides a wide range of support, training, information, social events and accessible activities for children and young people with Down Syndrome, their families and the professionals involved in their care. All of their activities and services are designed to empower, build knowledge and confidence, and support their members and their families to reach their potential, whilst providing the opportunity to build lasting friendships.

One of the team, Michael Powell, Fleet Office, Partner commented:

‘Stepping Stones DS is a fantastic charity that provides much needed support to children and young people with Downs Syndrome, their families and also the professionals involved in their care. The charity focuses on the North Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey areas and is an entirely volunteer led and self funded group. It costs approximately £7000 per month to run all the activities and the services they provide and all money is raised through fundraising, grants and donations. As we at Kirk Rice are new to Fleet, we are keen to support great local charities and Downs Syndrome DS certainly fits the bill.’

Team members were: Michael Powell, Margaret Marson and Amy Wheldon company runs the half marathon.

The fundraising page is still open, so if you would like to sponsor the Kirk Rice team its not too late. Visit the Virgin Money Giving page.
