- Seeing your pensions together could give you a clearer picture of your retirement savings and help you decide if you need personalised, professional financial advice.
Over a working lifetime, it is easy to accumulate several different pensions, particularly as you change jobs and employers. Keeping track of where they are held, what they are worth, and what they could provide in retirement has become increasingly difficult.
The Pensions Dashboard is being introduced to make this easier. The government-backed online service will allow you to securely find and view information about your different pensions, including your State Pension, in one place.
What is the Pensions Dashboard?
The MoneyHelper Pensions Dashboard is an online service being developed by the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS).
The Dashboard is designed to provide a single place where you can find and view information about workplace and personal pensions that can be successfully matched to you, alongside your State Pension.
The Pensions Regulator says the dashboards initiative aims to help people find their various pensions, reconnect with lost pension pots, and better understand their value in terms of estimated retirement income.
How will the Pensions Dashboard work?
Although you’ll be able to see information about different pensions together, the Dashboard will not hold everyone’s pension information in one large central database.
After your identity has been verified, a search can be sent securely to connected pension schemes and providers. They’ll check their records to establish whether they hold a pension that matches your details.
Where a pension is successfully matched, information about it can then be returned for you to view through the Dashboard.
In simple terms, the Dashboard provides the single online destination, while your pension information continues to come from the relevant schemes and providers.
When will the Pensions Dashboard be available?
The Money and Pensions Service expects the MoneyHelper Pensions Dashboard to become publicly available during the 2027/28 financial year. A specific launch date has not yet been confirmed. The launch date will be decided by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, with six months’ notice expected to be given to the pensions industry.
Does the Pensions Dashboard replace retirement planning or financial advice?
The Pensions Dashboard is designed to help you find and collate previously separate information about your pensions. It will not assess your personal circumstances or tell you whether your retirement plans are suitable.
Having several pension pots is not necessarily a reason to make changes. However, once you have a clearer picture of what you hold, you may want to consider how those pensions are performing, the charges you are paying, the investments they hold, and whether they remain appropriate for your retirement plans.
A professional financial planner can help you assess your pensions in this wider context. Importantly, moving or consolidating pensions will not always be appropriate, particularly where an existing pension includes valuable benefits or guarantees.
