Kirk Rice Team Complete The Spartan Race

Team Kirk Rice completed the Windsor Spartan Race on Sunday – raising over £2,000 for BLESMA.

At 2.30pm on Sunday, 7 October the Kirk Rice team shot out of the gates of the final Spartan Race Sprint of 2018 at Rapley Farm, Bagshot. Once we had broken the treeline, we were straight into the trails and bogs of the surrounding woodland and forced into single file with the other 100 or so runners in our heat. I myself managed to lose a trainer in a bog within minutes of starting and ended up jumping right back in to save it – at least now we were committed! Down the track we had our first obstacles – several 4ft walls to leap, giving us a flavour of what was coming. Following on, we tackled the large multi-bar rigs, sandbag carries and rope climbs the event threw at us over the next couple of kilometres. The rope climb in particular caused many of us to have to do the obligatory 30 burpees for failing obstacles, as the ropes were covered in mud and grip was difficult, but a few of us had clearly been practicing and managed to get away with not having to the forfeit burpees, much to the astonishment of the rest of the team.

Entering that last half of the 5km sprint event, we were greeted with a crawl under barbed wire for several meters, but were still managing to stay together as a team. As we rounded the last corner, we entered the home straight, but this is where the obstacles were most dense. After running through a stream, we had to pull ourselves up incline walls slippery with mud, and then straight onto the javelin throw event that again caused many of us to perform the punishment burpees as the straw figures were not easily pierced by the blunt javelins. Once we had tackled the penultimate obstacles, such as the Hercules Hoist, we ended with a great show of team spirit by helping each other over 8ft walls to finally jump over the fire pit signalling the end of the race 2 hours and 20 minutes after setting off.

Over the line, everyone received their finisher medals and free beer and took in the sense of accomplishment from what had just been achieved. We’ve raised over £2,000 for BLESMA and all the mud, sweat and tears on the day were well worth it, as the money raised is going to a great cause that will make a real difference to the lives of limbless ex-servicemen and women across the country.
